Air Pollution Causes 200,000 Early Deaths in US

“Air pollution causes about 200,000 early deaths each year in the United States” reports a Voice of America news article which quotes a study from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (See full article here).  “In the past five to 10 years, the evidence linking air-pollution exposure to risk of early death has really solidified and gained scientific and political traction,” says Steven Barrett, an assistant professor at MIT.  “According to Barrett, a person who dies from air-pollution causes typically dies about a decade earlier than he or she might have otherwise.”  Ten years of life seems like a good reason to have a Health Guardian air purifier!

Ozone Pollution

In the American Lung Association’s “State of the Air 2013″ (See the full report here) ozone is discussed.  “The ozone layer found high in the upper atmosphere (the stratosphere) shields us from much of the sun’s ultraviolet radiation.  However, ozone air pollution at ground level where we can breathe it (in the troposphere) causes serious health problems.”  Further, “It may be hard to imagine that pollution could be invisible, but ozone is.  The most widespread pollutant in the U.S. is also one of the most dangerous.”  They explain that ozone “aggressively attacks lung tissue by reacting chemically with it”.

“The EPA released their most recent review of the current research on ozone pollution in February 2013.  Their findings were that ozone: causes respiratory harm (e.g. worsened asthma, worsened COPD, inflammation); likely to cause early death (both short-term and long-term exposure); likely to cause cardiovascular harm (e.g. heart attacks, strokes, heart disease, congestive heart failure); may cause harm to the central nervous system; may cause reproductive and developmental harm.”

Many people use ozone-producing air filters because they like the “fresh” smell of the ozone; they do not realize that this ozone is dangerous and can kill them.  Health Guardian air purifiers remove air pollution without adding harmful chemicals like ozone.  In trials, the Health Guardian air purifiers lessened illness by up to 70% and lessened the need for asthma medication by 80% and allergy medication by 90%!  My family would not be without our Health Guardian air purifiers.  We value our health too much to try to live without them!

More Reports of Dangers of Air Pollution

Regarding the latest government air quality standards (See full article here) we see that “On December 14, 2012 the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) strengthened the nation’s air quality standards for fine particulate pollution to improve public health protection by revising the primary annual PM2.5 standard to 12 micrograms per cubic meter (ug/m3) and retaining the 24-hour fine particle standard of 35 ug/m3.   Continue reading

Exercise Outdoors on Days When Pollution Levels Are Low

An Op Ed in the Salt Lake Tribune (See full article here) noted that “Before exercising outdoors one should check levels of ozone and particulates.  During winter inversions or at other times of high particulate pollution it is best to exercise in the mountains or inside (health club or walking at a shopping mall)…Susceptible individuals and those with multiple cardiac risk factors should limit prolonged outdoor activity when Pm2.5 is between 20-35.  When Pm2.5 is Over 35, there should be no pronged outdoor exertion by anyone.”  Exercising outdoors is sometimes enjoyable, but checking pollution levels is wise.  I exercise indoors on a treadmill and exercise bike with a Health Guardian purifying the air so it is healthy to exercise anytime.

Skip the Febreeze

In Consumer Reports’ Shop Smart guide there is a list of ways to save money.  Number 11 is “Skip the Febreeze”.  It says: “The Febreeze TV commercial shows blindfolded people in a smelly room that was “Febreezed” describing the smell as “refreshing”.  We tried it: We brought blindfolded people into a room with sardines and a used cat-litter box that was sprayed with Febreeze Air Effects.  They did NOT use words like “refreshing”.  Our conclusion: The room was still smelly, but with fragrance on top.”

The only way to really get rid of odors is to use a Health Guardian air filter, which will eliminate the odors.  The absence of odor really is refreshing.  Putting fragrances on top of other odors just doesn’t cut it, no matter what brand you try!

Pollution-cholesterol Link to Heart Disease Seen

More and more evidence is piling up to warn people of the dangers of air pollution on health, particularly on the heart. The Los Angeles Times printed an article by Marla Cone on July 26, 2007 which states: “Strengthening the link between air pollution and cardiovascular disease, new research suggests that people with high cholesterol are especially vulnerable to heart disease when they are exposed to…ultra-fine particles that are common pollutants in urban air.  Microscopic particles in diesel exhaust combine with cholesterol to activate genes that trigger hardening of the arteries….Their combination creates a dangerous synergy that wreaks cardiovascular havoc far beyond what’s cause by the [air pollution] or cholesterol alone.”

In this study (Read the article in its entirety here), scientists say “their study, conducted on human cells as well as on mice, is the first to explain how particulates in the air activate genes that can cause heart attacks or strokes.  The researchers exposed human blood cells to a combination of diesel particles and oxidized fats, then extracted their DNA.  Working together, the particles and fats switched on genes that cause inflammation of blood vessels, which leads to clogged arteries, or atherosclerosis….”Our results emphasize the importance of controlling air pollution as another tool for preventing cardiovascular disease,” said Ke Wei Gong, A UCLA cardiology researcher who was one of the study’s authors.

A very good reason to make sure you have a Health Guardian and keep it running 24/7!

Indoor pollutants

The New York Times has reported that “Virtually every household and office building is a potential source of excessive amounts of one or another toxic pollutant — nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, formaldehyde, radon ( a radioactive product of radium), sulphur dioxide, asbestos, not to mention the chemicals in hairsprays, deodorants, oven cleaners, paints, pesticides, laundry aids, floor and furniture polishes, glue and, ironically, air fresheners (See article here).”  How happy I am that my family and I have a Health Guardian to purify the air we breathe! Everyone needs a Health Guardian!

Orem, Utah Pollution

July 10, 2013 saw some real haze over Orem, Utah skies.  Take a look.  No blue sky here.

Pollution in Orem Skies

Whatever is in the air is what you are breathing — no matter how polluted –

if you don’t have a Health Guardian system at your house!
